Graphite foam is the king of cool
Article Abstract:
Researchers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory have developed a simple fabrication procedure to make a highly conductive carbon-based foam. The graphitised foam has many applications, including use as heat sinks for microprocessor chips. Current heat sinks are extruded aluminum sections with fans, but the new material should make heat sinks smaller and may not require a fan, making it suitable for use in space-critical applications, such as laptop computers. Poco Graphite has licensed the technology which could be commercially available by early 2000.

Controllable foam tunes out noise: a new foam technology will enable car users to travel in much quieter vehicles
Article Abstract:
A flexible foam has been tuned to match the noise and vibration produced by any vehicle, through molecular control of the elastic modulus and visco-elasticity. The acoustic foam operates together with a carpet composite bonded to it. It is moulded to fit the floor pan profile, and the use of a PU foam with an adhesive surface can be bonded directly to the floor pan. The acoustic design of the foam is based on the mass/spring/dashpot principle.

The digital double helix
Article Abstract:
Motorola's DigitalDNA is an in-car electronics system which simplifies and amplifies in-car electronics. The system has already been trialled in the Volvo S80 and allows more electronic devices and systems to be integrated and controlled through a reduced wiring network, thereby enhancing the car's environmental performance.
