Grid encoder speeds machine-tool testing
Article Abstract:
Milacron Inc, maker of machine tools, improved data-gathering speed by 600% using Heidenhain Corp's KGM 101 grid encoder. The grid encoder gives the user information on the contour accuracy of machine tools for any one plane, and then compares it against the actual tool produced. The KGM 101 is mounted where the user works, so there is no need to move test materials to a different location for evaluation. The grid encoder works at speeds up to 3,500 inches per minute and can be used to test the control systems of any suppliers.

Wheel balancer silences vibration problems
Article Abstract:
Ford Motor Co. has utilized Ann Arbor, MI-based Baladyne Corp.'s BalaDyne IV automatic wheel balancers to remove the vibration problems observed in automobiles assembled in Ford's Cleveland, OH, plant. The new BalaDyne IV balancers reduced vibrations from 60 to 10 microinc, eliminated the whining noise from the engines, improved production in the Cleveland plant, balanced the machine, and extended the life of the product's grinding-wheel.
