How to be a star engineer
Article Abstract:
Most engineers become good performers, but only a few become stars. An ongoing study that began at Bell Laboratories in 1985 reveals nine interlocking work strategies that explain the difference. For example, average performers may often take the initiative, but they do so in small, relatively inconsequential ways. They fail to grasp that star-quality initiative implies responsibility beyond a job's description and usually involes some purpose that benefits everyone. For another example, average performers tend to see their job and its purposes only from their viewpoint, but stars adopt various points of view. They have a capability to understand what customers, competitors and colleagues will think about a product or a situation, and this makes it possible for them to work effectively when the implications of a project extend beyond the formal description of their job.
