Improve distillation column control
Article Abstract:
The control of distillation columns can be improved through several ways. Care must be taken that flow, level and pressure controllers are working properly. Analyzer deadtime, reliability and accuracy must also be examined. Temperature sensors should also be properly located and be pressure-compensated when used in measuring tray temperatures. Feed enthalpy should also be constant for low reflux columns. Internal flux control should also be used for changes in reflux temperatures.

A new option: osmotic distillation
Article Abstract:
Osmotic distillation is a new athermal membrane-separation process that is nearing commercialization mainly towards the food and beverage and pharmaceutical industries. The process involves contacting a liquid mixture containing a volatile component with a microporous, non-liquid- wettable membrane whose opposite side is exposed to a second liquid phase capable of absorbing the volatile component.
