Industrial electronics
Article Abstract:
Among the hot topics in the industrial electronics industry are fuzzy logic, intelligent control and computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM), all of which are intended to improve manufacturing flexibility and reduce costs. The precision of high-speed machining is expected to be improved through use of computer numerical control (CNC) based on reduced instruction set computer (RISC) chips. Other trends in the industry are the move toward an open system architecture for programmable controllers and machine vision systems and in X-ray laminography systems for inspecting solder joints of surface-mount components on printed circuit boards. Among the systems described are one for plasma-etching metal surfaces to prepare molds for injection molding that uses a fuzzy logic controller, an intelligent controller for gallium arsenide crystal growth and one for spray forming hard metal alloys.

Article Abstract:
VME bus for programmable controllers is becoming a standard backplane, and some can be linked to PCs. Also, intelligence is being incorporated into lower and lower levels in the control hierarchy. In the realm of industrial sensors, those announced in the past year based on silicon technology, are more sensitive to shock and vibration. New sensor systems are being perfected to protect workers. Manufacturers everywhere are striving to improve the cost effectiveness and reliability of their industrial controls. Many are turning to power-switching semiconductor devices with built-in protection against overvoltage and current that can also withstand high temperatures. Finally, intelligent industrial controls based on AI technology are definitely on the rise. Umecorp's Expert Controller is one example.

Article Abstract:
Industrial systems became more powerful in 1986, and better systems for controlling manufacturing processes and communicating with other systems emerged. Innovative manufacturing processes and software appeared, and demand for industrial computers on the production floor increased. Programmable controllers emphasizing miniaturization increased, and in the US, Vision Systems focused on inspection of components in electronics assembly.
