Making multiprocessor programming smoother
Article Abstract:
A combination of software from Multiprocessor Toolsmiths Inc (MTI, Ottawa, Canada) and Software Components Group Inc (SCGI) facilitates the programming and interactive debugging of transparent multiprocessing, multitasking applications on the RTS-860 Multiprocessor computer system from CSP Inc (Billerica, MA). The RTS-860 offers supercomputer-range performance (80Mflops to 2,560Mflops) for real-time applications by combining up to 16 Intel 80860 microprocessor-based CSP SuperCard vector processor cards. The computer runs an operating system that consists of SCGI's pSOS+ real-time kernel and MTI's Unison operating system. pSOS+ provides the underlying multitasking and multiprocessing capabilities while Unison adds UNIX-compatible file and network access system calls as well as remote procedure calls. The combination of software automates the development of applications that can be easily modified to accommodate varying numbers and types of processors in the host RTS-860 system. Interactive debugging from a single window with CSP's Remedy source-level debugger is discussed.

Computers and ICs: leading in notebooks, laptops, memory chips
Article Abstract:
East Asian countries are leading the world in production of laptop and notebook computers, the fastest-growing segments of the microcomputer industry. NEC accounts for over half the sales of microcomputers in Japan, but Toshiba has sold the most small computers. Fujitsu's FMR Card PC is the first notebook PC from Japan to use semiconductor memory cards exclusively in place of electromechanical disk drives. A US Commerce Department report released in Apr 1990 found that Japanese firms are almost equal to US firms in system-level hardware design, particularly in large-scale mainframes and supercomputers. Japanese firms have targeted the workstation and peripherals markets, and they have entered into many joint ventures in recent years. The strategy of Japanese integrated circuit manufacturers and the role of other Asian countries in worldwide computer and IC markets are discussed.

Article Abstract:
The two events of most significance in the data communications industry in 1990 were the fast acceptance by end users of the 10BaseT standard for Ethernet connections using unshielded twisted-pair wiring and the acceptance of the Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) by corporate MIS and government planners for backbone networks. The availability of a standard for Ethernet over standard telephone wires is expected to lead to a boom in the market for 10BaseT-based devices among users wanting to avoid the use of coaxial cable. FDDI chip sets were introduced by at least three semiconductor firms, and several others are developing FDDI products. Forrester Research Inc estimates the US market for FDDI bridges, routers, hubs and single-attachment stations will reach $453 million in 1993 from $35.5 million in 1990. FDDI developments by several firms are described.
