The plastic additives industry are hounded for the last two years by problems such as lagging profits, flat growth in the plastic markets and environmental and safety questions. Industry players have responded by focusing on core businesses and technologies, expansion of the services they offer and improvement in products. Several companies merged or formed joint ventures to survive the global competition.

Ion exchange charges ahead

Ion exchange resin producers and equipment suppliers are exploring new applications to increase their market share. Areas being explored include chemical process industries, hydrometallurgy, ultrapure pharmaceutical production, electronics manufacturing, and environmental compliance applications. The demand for ion exchange resins and equipment are still strong in water treatment, sugar and food sectors. The Asian financial crisis had little effect on its sales according to Paul Baduini, director of marketing for Rohm and Haas.
