The government's approval of the A34 Newbury Bypass has met mixed response, including opposition by environmental campaigners, and relief by district and county planners. The bypass is expected to ease traffic congestion in Newbury, which at the moment is estimated to total 50,000 vehicles per day. Environmental campaigners are concerned that the bypass will damage various historic sites.
