Burke Industries Inc of San Jose, CA uses Flow Vision Inc's Advisor on-line surface inspection monitor to reduce the production of scrap by 80% in the company's roofing membrane manufacturing process. The system, which is computer-programmable, discriminates product surface defects by type and size. The Advisor system consists of a computerized console, monitors, video cameras and light source. The camera detects light changes occurring on roofing membrane surfaces passing beneath the vision system, and sends signals to web operators to allow them to identify defects on the products.

ISO 9002: one company's experience

Lyndhurst, NJ-based Dwight D.I.C. Inc., a metrology laboratory which specializes in calibration of fixed-limit gages for the metalworking industry, pursued ISO 9000 certification after recognizing the need to standardize its operations. Problems were encountered during the search for a qualified consultant. More problems were also faced during the implementation of the ISO quality system.
