Putting speech recognizers to work
Article Abstract:
Several companies in the US, Japan, and Europe market systems able to recognize words or phrases from a limited vocabulary spoken by a particular individual. Other organizations are working on systems able to accept large vocabularies of words spoken without pauses and speaker-independent. Dragon Systems has made some progress with a voice-operated typewriter using an isolated-word, speaker-dependent system than can recognize 1,000 words. For some special applications with limited vocabularies and rigid syntax, like accident reports or medical reports for insurance claims, a few hundred words could be useful. Buyers should be cautious, however, because tricks such as training a system to recognize an entire sentence, small vocabularies with different-sounding words, or training on test data are misleading. Several systems now under development are discussed.

Software
Article Abstract:
Artificial intelligence (AI) became a viable tool in 1986 as applications proliferated and AI software became capable of running on a variety of hardware platforms. Programming tools for large scale software projects appeared, and include design and specification languages as well as coding and integration tools. The Strategic Defense Initiative Office readjusted its software research program and received expert recommendation to begin systems design with software feasibility and testability rather than with hardware.
