Rambus: Friend or foe?
Article Abstract:
Rambus Inc's share value dropped precipitously on Mar 15, 2001, reflecting a perception that the company's legal case might be coming apart. A patent infringement lawsuit against Infineon Technologies AG, of Munich, Germany, looms in Rambus' immediate future, and six more actions will follow. Rambus claims that its patents for Rambus dynamic RAM, or RDRAM, also cover aspects of synchronous DRAM and double-data-rate synchronous DRAM, known as SDRAM and DDR, respectively. If Rambus loses its legal battle, licenses it holds for SDRAM and DDR are likely to collapse, along with benefits it hoped to obtain from its own memory technology.
