Wireless Andrew: bringing mobile computing to a university community of 10 000
Article Abstract:
Carnegie Mellon University is working toward having a $1-mil wireless network, called Wireless Andrew in place by the end of 1999 according to Alex Hills, Distinguished Service Professor of Engineering and Public Policy, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. The network will serve 10,000 faculty, students and staff in 28 buildings on 40 hectares. The network was started in 1994, funded by the National Science Fdtn. Wireless off-campus or out-of-WaveLAN-network-range access is based on cellular digital packet data (CDPD) transmission. Dial-up modems are used for off-campus access, but DSL is used more and more. Statistics indicate data accounts for only around 3% of wireless traffic, so the potential for growth is very great. Structure of Wireless Andrew, named for Andrew Carnegie, is described.

System tests many cellphone types
Article Abstract:
A new high-performance system from IFR Systems can test many types of cellular telephones. The wireless test instrument can deal with CDPD, AMPS, NAMPS, TDMA and offers user interfaces that are either Spanish or English. The device is fully portable at 11.8 kg and the user controls the degree of testing, quick and efficient or comprehensive. Call registration, hand-off, page responses and antenna and cable loss tests can be made, and it can also test supervisory audio tone/signaling tone. All of the Marconi products are marketed under the IFR brand since the company acquired Marconi Instruments Ltd. of the UK. Several other wireless tests instruments were introduced after the acquisition in 2/98.
