Refurbishment
Article Abstract:
Refurbishment of electrical systems often requires very different procedures and considerations than when working on a new project, usually because existing users of the accommodation have to be worked around. Their needs have to be studied and they will want to be kept informed of what is going on. Care has to be taken to ensure the original fabric of the building is not compromised especially when it is of architectural interest. Existing furnishings and decoration need to be matched. Frequently an appreciable section of such work needs to be done at night to avoid interrupting the routines of the existing user.

Stretch BS 5750 for safety
Article Abstract:
BS 5750 defines management functions and checks to ensure a consistent quality of product is achieved in a firm. However, the standard's application can be limited and it does not ensure similar levels of quality between frims. In electrical installations which have a life-saving aspect such as fire alarms, further testing is required. This should be based on the product certification concept, treating the installed system as a product. The installer's record and quality systems should be assessed as well as the performance of the installation.

Factory works; special environments need special precautions
Article Abstract:
Electrical contractors must take special precautions when working in industrial premises. Maximum safety must be combined with minimun disruption to the occupier. Areas with hazardous atmospheres can be served by external and modular equipment which can be altered and maintained easily. Where work in hazardous or wet conditions is unavoidable, the work area must be protected, use of tools will be restricted and protective clothing must be worn. Staff should be breifed on the dangers of the factory environment and trained in safety procedures.
