State of the Internet: Roundtable 5.0
Article Abstract:
IEEE Spectrum's annual State of the Internet Roundtable discussion, which convened in Jun 1999, in San Jose, CA, looked back on a year in which the Internet finally became acceptable for commercial use. High-speed access emerged, with DSL, cable modems and wireless technologies being widelay offered. The Internet is continuing to grow rapidly, and one estimate puts the number of users worldwide at 165 million. In a brief concluding statement, Vinton Cerf, regarded as a co-inventor of the Internet, foresees an Interplanetary Internet by the year 2008, with a system in operation between here and Mars. Other participants in this year's discussions include: Thomas A. DeFanti, Donald M. Heath, Christian Huitema, Lawrence H. Landweber, Craig Partridge, Glenn Ricart and Pamela Samuelson.

Fueling the Internet
Article Abstract:
The economic impact of the Internet in terms of its energy consumption is controversial. Some industry observers contend that the Net, taken together with PCs, servers and computer manufacturing, is causing significant increases of power consumption. California's 'rolling outages' are cited as an example of how social and economic problems can result. Others say that California's power problems have many causes but the Internet is not one of them. Some observers say structural changes in the economy, helped by the Internet, tend to reduce overall energy use.

A world divided by a common Internet
Article Abstract:
The digital Internet divide between the rich and poor nations is growing with the most interesting factor being affordability, defined by what it costs to access the Internet as a percentage of country's gross national income per capita. A year of Internet access by most of the developed world costs more than three-and-a-half times of the total income of an average Nigerian.
