Students pull off a cunning stunt
Article Abstract:
Cranfield University, England, has completed building a specialist aerobatic plane, the specification for which was drawn in 1968 by top UK stunt pilot Neil Williams. The A1-200 has been developed over the years by a succession of students at the university but a donation of 20,000 pounds sterling allowed the first prototype plane to be built and tested in 1978. The second version, the A1-200, is able to travel further than its predecessor. A new intake of degree students is to work on A1-400 to give it an enhanced fin and rudder, made from composite materials.

Material developments
Article Abstract:
Issues concerning the trends in the use of different materials are presented. Since 1980 there has been rapid growth in the use of plastics and their composites. Their application has often replaced the use of metal, although a combination of plastic and metal can increase effectiveness.
