Know Your Uncertainty
Article Abstract:
Measuring uncertainty budgets in manufacturing requires an understanding of the measuring process being evaluated and then identifying uncertainty contributors. Thereafter, two types of evaluating uncertainty contributors are used, i.e., statistical tools to find a standard deviation from observations and other means to determine an equivalent standard deviation.

To extract information from data, statistics are a necessary tool. However, the manufacturer should obtain factors, either random or controllable, which affect statistics. Statistical Process Control as an analysis tool for specific operations, and Design of Experiments as a systematic tool are differentiated.
