Swift justice
Article Abstract:
The culprit in the so-called Melissa virus case was quickly found and the virus was quickly stopped in its proliferation, which could have been very great. For an individual user the virus was not a problem but servers that must handle e-mail could quickly have been overwhelmed by overwhelming proliferation of messages. The case demonstrates how fast international cooperation in the communications world can be when that world is threatened. The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) reacted very quickly, and network administrators of the world were told about the problem in time to stop it. The FBI and virus prevention software companies worked with security specialists to get rid of the virus and arrest its creator. The events of the case and the nature of the virus are related. Companies discussed include Microsoft, America Online, Network Associates, Orlando Access, Phar Lap Software.
