Switching megawatts takes microseconds
Article Abstract:
ABB Semiconductors is developing a new power handling device, the Gate Commuted Thyristor, that can be stacked to cope with higher voltages. The device is claimed to set new standards of reliability, cost, efficiency, speed and reliability and is designed for use in medium voltage applications, such as transmission lines, industrial motor drives and industrial VAR compensators.
