Telecom research draws IBM to Beijing
Article Abstract:
China's modern telecommunications infrastructure has prompted IBM to assist in the development of computer-based Chinese language processing technologies. IBM will build a research facility in Beijing to develop key technologies that will facilitate telecommunications in the country. The laboratory has established ties with five Chinese universities to conduct the research work. The project, which will be led by Columbia (NY) University-educated George Wang, involves an initial capital outlay of $3 million by IBM.

IBM Corp has decided to take over its two small businesses engaged in infrared and graphics compression technology in an effort to ensure the relevance of R&D to overall business goals. The move addresses the challenge of nurturing the promising business ventures without affecting other operations. IBM's Research Division has been tasked to manage the two business units, namely, the Advanced Infrared Wireless Communications Group in Toronto, Ontario, and the Digital Video Products Group in Endicott, NY.
