The beauty of 'almost standard' VLSI
Article Abstract:
Semistandard integrated circuits (ICs) offer proven designs that can be modified for distinctive features. These ICs are partly standard and partly made-to-order, so they benefit from high-volume production techniques as well as from special features. A designer has to look at semicustom and application-specific IC (ASIC) chips, too, before making a decision. ASICs are designed to a specific application, and have high initial costs. Semicustom are, in some ways, much like semistandard, but have different design cycles and costs associated. A semistandard manufacturer is much more accommodating to the customer. Several examples are provided. A problem that should be addressed up-front is: Who has the rights to jointly developed technology?

Tom L. Powers on Communications: VLSI Will Reduce Bandwith Costs and Make Complex Services Possible
Article Abstract:
Technological trends in communications in the eighties include national and international call-digital networks with less expensive bandwidth and more complex services possible due to increasing software use. Low-cost transmission facilities, advanced software, and large amounts of VLSI will be the keys. Lightwave systems and cellular mobile radio telephony also will see increased development.

Wescon '83: VLSI in the Spotlight
Article Abstract:
Wescon '83, held November 8-11, 1983, in San Francisco emphasized very large-scale integration technologies. Also discussed were computer-aided design and computer-aided engineering with an emphasis on workstations. Packaging, instrumentation, digital-to-analog conversion, and 16 and 32-bit microprocessors were also session topics.
