The car: just a Web browser with tires
Article Abstract:
Automakers are deciding how to equip vehicles with Internet access. One way to proceedmight be to equip a luxury model with many capabilities, such as navigation, wireless connectivity, traffic updates, natural language speech processing, car audio, virtual dashboards and multimedia. An economy vehicle would offer only two or three such features. Sun Microsystems' chief, Scott McNealy, speaking at an automotive electronics conference, characterized a car of the future as 'a Web browser with tires.'

Forecasting traffic flow
Article Abstract:
Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) are being researched that would use information about traffic to speed up travel and make it safer. Research groups, usually funded by Federal and regional government agencies, are investigating uses of 'predictive traffic modeling.' One way information could be gathered would involve tracking mobile telephones. However, the capability to track handsets generates controversy because of implications having to do with privacy.
