The performance rating
Article Abstract:
Some argue that the traditional annual corporate employee performance review is inadequate. Often human resources will change the yardstick for measuring performance from year to year. This change is often the result of the appearance of new theories on how to manage and motivate workers. Another trend within companies is to publicly declare the rating to the employee in question. This gives them an indication of where they stand in the company. However, there are problems with this technique. Workers given a low rating will likely be openly critical about the rating system, which in turn will undermine employee confidence in both the system and management. The allocation of a public rating to an employee may also result in conflict between workers, who may feel they are being wrongly grouped with other people of less talent.

Many organizations that complain about a lack of space have parceled out too much space and equipment to its workers. Space committees rarely accomplish anything because the people who work in the evaluated work areas often know in advance that they will be analyzed and they purposely skew the committees' results. There is a tremendous degree of possessiveness in the work force that builds into power struggles. The most important people believe they need more space and equipment. The researchers with the most space are often viewed as more important than those without as much space. This pattern snowballs into a recurring need for more superfluous system administrators and more equipment.

When is dumb smarter?
Article Abstract:
A writer opines that being 'dumb' in real life is frequently the most excellent approach to solving a problem in the long run even if the notion seems strange. He notes the many instances when engineers or programmers, for example, devise what they consider a clever solution to a problem, only to find out at a later point in time that the solution is causing more problems than the issue it was designed to solve. The actual realization of what is considered a clever solution in technology frequently results in unforseen and, many times, disastrous consequences.
