Article Abstract:
Development of new battery technologies that will make electronic devices significantly more energy-efficient is discussed. The portable fuel cell is the focus of many companies as they seek ways to generate electricity without pollution. The major environmental impact of batteries is discussed. Rechargeable batteries are not recommended with various kinds of equipment. Energizer has a new, novel alkaline battery based on titanium composites. Duracell has developed what it says is the power powerful battery in the world, the Ultra with M(sub.3) Technology. A major advance, the lithium battery made of malleable plastic or polymer, is discussed. Companies whose activities are discussed include Millennium Sanyo Energy (USA), the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Co., a nonprofit created by the Portable Rechargeable Battery Assoc., of which Sanyo was a founding member, Multicell, Medis El Ltd. (Israel), Israel Aircraft Industries Lrd., and Manhattan Scientifics. Data on batteries discarded in the US is given.

The fuel oil supply, the electricity generation markets, and alternative fuel sources are discussed with consideration of trends toward deregulation. The markets have merged into one whole. Data on the supply of coal for power generation, of crude oil and refined products including heating oil, and on prices are included The function of the North American Electric Reliability Council in self-regulation of the electricity utilities of the US is discussed.The Electric Reliability 2000 Act, pssed in the Senate, gives the industry some guidelines for deregulating.
