Coastal flooding, global warming and environmental management

Article Abstract:

A study on the causes and components of coastal flooding as well as the connection of global warming with changes in sea level is presented. Some of the causes cited are fixed flood defenses, extraction of underground resources, such as water and natural gas, and growing occupancy of flood-prone lands. The major components of flood hazard, magnitude and frequency, are explained in terms of historical and spatial contexts. The important role of coastal-zone managers in addressing the problem of coastal flooding is discussed.

Rebuilding after the Tsunami: Getting it Right

Article Abstract:

The Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) has set up principles that could be use to guide the massive investments to be made over the next several years to rehabilitate and reconstruct the thousands of kilometers of coastlines devastated by 26th December 2004 tsunami. The six principles to guide what is done and the five principles to guide how the rehabilitation program is implemented is discussed.

Lessons learned from practicing integrated coastal management in Southeast Asia

Article Abstract:

Eight coastal zone management projects in Southeast Asia are analyzed for common performance indicators. Although only those projects in Batangas Bay, Philippines, and Xiamen, China, have been implemented, goals from all these programs share research in reducing environmental stress, ensuring the programs' stability, and in slowing or stopping environmental degradation.
