Ecological basis of sustainable harvesting: is the prevailing paradigm of compensatory mortality still valid?
Article Abstract:
The difficulties associated with the compensation paradigm and critical gaps concerning the knowledge regarding density-dependent mechanisms in population regulation is demonstrated using the example of the mallard Anas platyrhynchos in North America. It is found that the ecological systems are susceptible to change, probably at a very fast rate and a flexible management strategy should be adopted.

Breeding success of sympatric dabbling ducks in relation to population density and food resources
Article Abstract:
The issue of whether animal populations are regulated on breeding performance and mortality by density-dependant feedback processes is discussed. Also, variation in per capita breeding success in three sympatric breeding dabbling ducks to population density and food resource abundance over a 12 year period is discussed.

Density dependence, regulation and open-closed populations: insights from the wigeon, Anas penelope
Article Abstract:
The effect of degree of exchange with other populations on the occurrence of density-dependent regulation is investigated. The data from an Icelandic and a Finnish population of breeding wigeons are analyzed.
