Fire in the mother lung
Article Abstract:
In 1983, a gigantic forest fire occurred in Indonesia, where one of the few remaining great tropical forests lie. As a result, the government came up with an adequate forest plan that covers a forest inventory, forestry research, a national park project and the conservation of an existing watershed. The national plan came under attack from many non-governmental organizations. These questioned the true beneficiary of such plan, claiming further that it is lenient towards timber-cutting, replanting requirements and forest fire protection. However, the plan is still a positive step inspite of the criticisms.

The Duce Syndrome
Article Abstract:
Ninety percent of the more than 200 million water buffaloes in the world are found in Asia. This animal has been neglected throughout history as it represents the poverty of its home country. The capabilities of the buffalo, a potential source of food and a pollution-free work animal, have been realized only after a shortage of fuel during the gulf war. Water buffaloes are sturdy and can survive in desert conditions. India is rich in buffalo population, which produces nearly half the milk consumed by 865 million people.

The role of rural development in protecting tropical rainforests: evidence from Sri Lanka
Article Abstract:
Two forest dependency models for the Knuckles and Sinharaja forests in Sri Lanka were developed which proposed rural development that reduce the dependency of local communities on forest resources as an alternative approach for forest protection. Results revealed that involvement in non-farm and non-forestry employment, higher agricultural income, higher agricultural productivity, better education and the incorporation of local communities into the outside markets can reduce dependency on forest resources.
