Ingestion of nitrate from well water by village people in Indonesia
Article Abstract:
Studies conducted in Lombok and Java, Indonesia, indicate that millions of people are at risk for illness due to drinking-water nitrate levels in excess of those considered safe by the World Health Organization. Nitrate contamination results from sewage discharged into the soil, which leaches into groundwater and poisons wells; nitrate ingestion has been found to cause infant methaemoglobinaemia, and may be linked to cancer, thyroid hypertrophy and diabetes.

Conference on the Aral Sea - women, children, health and environment
Article Abstract:
The 1998 Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences conference focused on the health hazards presented by pollution of the Aral Sea, and strategies to mitigate them. Excessive agricultural exploitation of the lands and rivers surrounding the sea have led to negative environmental impacts such as erosion, salinization and air pollution, which in turn create nutrition and health problems.
