Lemming predators on the Siberian tundra

Article Abstract:

Lemming predators have been studied on the Siberian tundra. The Siberian lemming (Lemmus sibiricus) and the collared lemming (Dicrostonyx torquatus) are the most common ones in the Eurasian Arctic. Lemmings are the main food for five common predators of the area and the five make up a foraging guild. Across 17 sites positive associations were found between numbers of the snowy owl and two skuas. A negative association was seen between snowy owl numbers and those of rough-legged buzzards. Large variation was seen in local population density among the predators. significant relationships were seen between lemming abundance and abundance of each predator.

Large-scale differentiation and dynamics in tundra plant populations and vegetation

Article Abstract:

Large-scale dynamics and differentiation have been studied in tundra plant populations and vegetation by the Swedish-Russian Tundra Ecology -94 expedition. Fruticose lichen distribution was investigated. The lichens depend on different types of asexual reproduction for dispersal. Large differences between sites were seen in flowering and vegetative ramet production, or vegetative reproduction, in Carex. The differences reflected an asynchronous year-to-year population fluctuation related to cyclic lemming populations and climate. Carex populations were diverse genetically despite old ages and frequently low flowering levels.
