Consequences of preferential flow in cracking clay soils for contamination-risk of shallow aquifers
Article Abstract:
A method of evaluating the potential contamination-risk of shallow aquifers protected by clay soils was developed. The method took into consideration the risks posed by the preferential flow of contaminants through shrinkage cracks. By using the method, accurate contamination maps of shallow aquifers were developed. These maps helped in formulating new strategies to reduce the risk of contamination in aquifers used as sources of drinking water.
