Nitrogen deposition and the biodiversity of boreal forests: Implications for the nitrogen critical load
Article Abstract:
The impact of nitrogen (N) deposition on vegetation in the boreal forest of northern Sweden is examined. The addition of low N doses led to important vegetational change and the recovery of the vegetation after ceasing N input was found to be a very slow process. Hence, it is suggested that the empirically based critical load of N for boreal forests should be lowered to 6 kg N ha(super -1) yr(super-1).

Article Abstract:
Research focuses on whether the carbon dioxide sink observed in forest soils exposed to nitrogen deposition is able to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions. Studies were conducted at various European and North American sites; statistics and implications for environmental effects are discussed.

Regional differences in the occurrence of understorey species reflect nitrogen deposition in Swedish forests
Article Abstract:
Research on 557 coniferous forest stands in Sweden shows that even low nitrogen deposition rates may reduce abundance of dominant species in forest-floor flora, changing vegetation dynamics and plant populations. Results are presented for both Scots pine and Norway spruce stands.
