Population dynamics of a polychaete during three El Nino events: Disentangling biotic and abiotic factors
Article Abstract:
Population model based on detailed monitoring data of three E1 Nino events were developed focused on the population dynamics of one species in the community, the polychaete Sigambra bassi, which showed different responses in different E1 Nino events. The way in which population models can be used to decode information hidden in long term monitoring data of abiotic and biotic community parameters about factors driving population dynamics is found.

Inter-population variation in demographic parameters: A neglected subject?
Article Abstract:
A comparison of survival, fecundity and population dynamics of nine populations of the black-legged kittiwakes Rissa tridactyla, a colonial seabird spread over two oceans is presented. The way in which comparative studies of inter-population variation in demographic parameters can improve ones understanding of population dynamics and the evolution of life histories is discussed.

The intrinsic mean time to extinction: a unifying approach to analyzing persistence and viability of populations
Article Abstract:
A simulation model concerned with extinction is evaluated to analyze the persistence and viability of small populations. It is shown that T(sub m), the intrinsic mean time to extinction, is the basic currency for the assessment of persistence and viability, as it is independent of initial conditions and allows the risk of extinction to be calculated for any time horizon.
