Reproductive failure in Baltic sea trout (Salmo trutta) compared with the M74 syndrome in Baltic salmon (Salmo salar)
Article Abstract:
An investigation into reproduction disturbances in Baltic sea trout (Salmo trutta) taken from the streams on Gotland, Sweden were not similar to those found in Baltic salmon (Salmo salar). However trout from the Ava river in the Stockholm archipelago have show mortality rates of yolk-sac fry to be between 18-35%. Reproduction disturbances were also reported in sea trout located in in the Dalalven, Indalsalven and Umealven rivers along the Swedish Baltic coast where the mortality for salmon fry was much higher.

A review of early mortality syndrome (EMS) in Great Lakes Salmonids: relationship with thiamine deficiency
Article Abstract:
Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) that affects salmonids in the Great Lakes region shows similarities to Cayuga syndrome that affects Atlantic salmon in the New York Finger Lakes region and M74 syndrome that affects Baltic Sea salmon. Researchers have identified low thiamine concentrations in salmon eggs and fry in all three symptoms. When thiamine levels fall below required levels, the species exhibit loss of equilibrium, reduced respiration and heart rates.

Screening for microorganisms associated with M74 disease syndrome in sea-run Baltic salmon (Salmo salar)
Article Abstract:
Routine microbiological screening methods showed no association between pathogenic microorganisms or prokaryotic agents associated with lesions in sea-run Baltic salmon (Salmo salar) infected with M74 syndrome. Futher study is needed to identify unknown pathogens affecting salmon and to identify other symbiotic GI-flora in salmon that might cause the M74 syndrome.
