Source and sink habitats of Red-winged Blackbirds in a rural/suburban landscape
Article Abstract:
Research in the Boulder, CO area between 1995 and 1997 indicates that sources for Red-winged Blackbirds have disappeared from natural habitats where they once occurred, such as tallgrass prairie and wetlands. While sinks consistently occurred in anthropogenic habitats such as ditches, predation by corvids and raccoons determined source-sink status, and functioned as human-commensal predators with encroaching urbanization.

Breeding bird density in woodlots: effects of depth and buildings at the edges
Article Abstract:
A prediction model for bird populations is presented, and applied to a series of Pennsylvanian woodlots using woodlot depth as the primary variable. Findings show that size and distance from urban areas are both important factors, as Ovenbird populations showed sensitivity to habitat fragmentation and other species showed sensitivity to the presence of buildings.

Testing a simulation model for population viability analysis
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that habitat fragmentation can significantly affect the accuracy of population dynamics predictions. Data were obtained using a generic computer simulation model for arboreal marsupials in southeastern Australia, and sampled for the impact of habitat size and quality on population dispersal.
