Streams in Mediterranean climate regions: abiotic influences and biotic responses to predictable seasonal events
Article Abstract:
Abiotic influences and biotic responses to predictable seasonal events related to streams and seasonal flooding and drying in Mediterranean climate regions are discussed. Riparian input is more protracted than in forest-area temperate streams. Testable hypotheses relating to influence of the stream hydrograph on fauna, richness, abundance, diversity and other aspects are offered. Water abstraction, pollution, flow regulation, and higher salinity limit ability of streams to survive as sustainable self-regulated systems.

The functional significance of the hyporheic zone in streams and rivers
Article Abstract:
The hyporheic zone, which lies below surface streams and above the groundwater zone and may be beside alluvial aquifers or parafluvial zones, is an active between the surface stream and groundwater as an ecotone. Exchanges of nutrients, water and organic matter occur as a response to variations in discharge and bed topography and porosity. Over all scales the functional significance of the hyporheic zone relates to the activity of the zone and its connection with surface streams.
