The reality of the stomach: coastal management at the local level in eastern Africa
Article Abstract:
Coastal zones of East African countries offer considerable potential for economic growth, and management programs in this region have had varied success. Projects that focus on biodiversity protection that neglect local development succeed for a short while only, yet projects that utilize local and national ownership are successful in the long term. Private enterprise is the most important single factor that drives change in this region.

Coastal resources utilization and conservation issues in Bagamoyo, Tanzania
Article Abstract:
The coastal resources of Bagamoyo, Tanzania, have been analyzed. These include coral reefs at Mwamba Kuni and Mishingwi for fishing, mangroves for fuel, charcoal, traditional medicines and building materials, and solar salt production. Overexploitation and habitat destruction has produced declining catches. Resources users are knowledgeable about these resources, although largely unaware of their interconnectedness.
