This 'underwater windmill' makes rivers lift themselves
Article Abstract:
The water-current tribune, designed by the British consultants Peter Garman and Barbara Sexon, is meant for harnessing the energy of the Nile to irrigate Sudan Deserts. The turbine is now usable anywhere in shallow water, and is made of parts that are easy to procure and handle. It costs $12000 in the UK, and is a pollutant free, non-oil consuming device that can be used throughout the day. Plata Pump and Chinese turbine pumps are other water-powered-engines with limited application.

The TARA handpump: a star is born in Bangladesh
Article Abstract:
The Tara handpump is an efficient and inexpensive device developed in Bangladesh to solve the water shortage problem. It was created for use in areas where the groundwater level has fallen to shallow or medium depths. The first Tara handpump was built in July 1982. Subsequent tests and research for the improvement of the design have rendered this tool indispensable to the Bangladeshis. Plans to promote this product internationally have been considered.

Increased UV-B radiation may affect rice crops
Article Abstract:
Studies by scientists from the International Rice Research Institute (Philippines) reveal that exposure to increased ultraviolet-B radiation affects rice plants. These plants were found to be shorter with smaller and thicker leaves, have decreased dry weight, damaged cells and tissues and less total nutrient intake. However, since there are so many rice varieties, the effects are expected to differ from one variety to another.
