Uses of evolutionary theory in the Human Genome Project
Article Abstract:
The Human Genome Project (HGP) and its use of evolutionary theory are discussed. Genetic diversity is now a major focus of the project. Evolutionary theory gives analytical tools valuable for this pursuit. Population thinking of evolutionary biology is important in that it is in opposition to naive genetic determinism in application of HGP results to human health issues and other issues related to human well-being. Context dependency and sampling bias are in disease association studies requiring population information for effective use.

Historical extinctions in the sea
Article Abstract:
Vulnerability of marine organisms to global deletion is discussed. The record of neoextinctions in the ocean is reviewed and discussed relative to temporal and spatial patterns. The possible extent of underestimation of marine neoextinctions is reviewed. Knowing about extinct species for evolutionary biology is of value. Studying about taxonomically buried species, hidden in synonymy of still-extant species, can advance phylogeny.
