Birmingham Steel selling two facilities
Article Abstract:
Birmingham, AL-based Birmimgham Steel Corp has agreed to sell its special bar quality operations in Cleveland, and Memphis, TN, to North American Metals Ltd. The divestitute was promoted by the need of the company to eliminate operating losses related to facilities. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but Birmingham Steel officials annnounced that they expect the proceeds of the sale will enable the company to significantly reduce debt and interest expenses.

ALLIED WASTE TO BUY BFI
Article Abstract:
Allied Waste Industries has offered to acquire Browning-Ferris Industries. (BFI). If the acquisition is successful, it would result in a firm with an annual income of $6.6 billion and would be called Allied Waste Industries Inc. Allied Waste CEO Thomas H Van Weelden said the proposed merger with BFI would result in the establishment of an efficient and strongly competitive player in the solid waste services industry.
