Supermarket composting in California
Article Abstract:
Supermarkets in California are recycling unsaleable goods in their stores. The program was initiated by Community Recycling and Resource Recovery Inc. in 1994 in collaboration with 28 Vons grocery stores, owned by Vons Companies Inc., one of the largest chain store in San Diego, Ca. By Jul 1, 1997, an estimated 750 supermarkets will have joined the endeavor. The major reasons for supermarket participation are due to the inexpensive disposal of unsaleable goods and the mandated 50% reduction of waste by 2000.
