Most mothers resort to grossly overused yet ineffective forms of punishment when dealing with child misbehavior, including yelling, threatening or grounding. Twelve strategies are presented to help mothers tailor their response to misbehavior according to the situation and the child's age and personality.

Teaching children the right way of handling aggression and resolving conflicts requires that parents become role models. Parents should be respectful of one another, be present to correct aggressive behavior, devote time to talking with children, monitor TV programs and avoid spanking.
