From yellow pads, to typewriters, to wordprocessors: confessions of a.... Writer? Author? Scholar?
Article Abstract:
An University of Rhode Island sociology professor first published a paper in 1973 which had been read at a professional meeting and then rejected by two major scholarly journals. With the encouragement of his mentor, the professor sent the paper to a third journal where it was published. The professor is a strong advocate of mentoring and has published many works with his graduate students. He believes works should be evaluated on the basis of their contribution to the field and that authors should publish in journals read by their peers rather than submitting only to the leading journals.

Scholarly publication: a career retrospective
Article Abstract:
An University of Florida sociology professor first published articles derived from his doctoral dissertation and has continued publishing because he believes it is essential for recognition in any field. He suggests that authors seek to expand on important but unnoticed areas of study or topics with wide social significance. Authors should use established research guidelines and produce quality work when expecting to get published. The professor advocates mentoring because that is how he got started and says credit should be given in relation to the amount of work each author did.

Generativity in a professional sense
Article Abstract:
A Brigham Young University professor began publishing after he finished graduate school. His mentors warned him about rejection letters and so saw he them as a part of the process. He believes mentoring is important and has published many articles with his graduate students which gives him a sense of connection with the next generation of professors. The professor feels too much emphasis has been put on statistical analyses while he always focused on what contribution his works would make in the field.
