Multiple roles and the self: a theory of role balance
Article Abstract:
Role balance, an alternative to role hierarchy, is a preferred pattern of role system organization and is positively associated with self-esteem. People who are able to achieve a balance between their various roles and activities feel less role strain and have improved self-esteem. Self-organization of roles and activities is a matter of choice and not an established fact. Dramatic life events help in the development of a more balanced pattern of self-organization. Such self-organization can also be the outcome of events of lesser significance.

The perils of love, or why wives adapt to husbands during the transition to parenthood
Article Abstract:
A longitudinal study was conducted among 69 couples having an average age of 23.5 for husbands and 21 for wives to determine the reasons why wives adapt to their husbands during the transition phase en route to parenthood. The results of the hierarchical linear regressions suggested that the newlywed preferences of the husbands are indicators of changes in the wives' preferences. The results further indicated that effect of the husbands' preferences are dependent on the degree of the wives' affection.
