Publishing: in search of a home
Article Abstract:
Scholarly publishing is an accepted part of academic life because of the 'publish or perish' mentality, but few scholars attempt to find appropriate markets for their articles especially for marriage and family topics. Publishing does not need to be a stressful activity if markets are researched because knowing an editor's current needs can help guide submissions. Journals not published by professional organizations should not be left out of a scholar's search because most submissions are peer-reviewed in all journals and these journals often spend more time on their submission authors.

The Charybdis of publishing in academia
Article Abstract:
There are many myths involved in academic publishing for example that journal reviewers are necessarily peers when they are often associate editors instead. However, even when it is a jury of peers, peers are not always objective which is the ideal. The publish or perish environment sets up an adversarial relationship between reviewers and authors. Reviewers' comments are not always constructive because they reflect the reviewers' biases. Therefore, rejection letters are not necessarily the final say and can be contested if the author believes the reviewer was not objective.

Editors' tips to authors: "guidelines for novitiates" and "how to avoid fatal mistakes." (Reports on Publishing Survey) (Publishing in Journals on the Family: Essays on Publishing)
Article Abstract:
A survey of 400 editors categorized some of the aspects of social science research that editors look for and what writers should avoid. The main criteria given for success were a clear, concise writing style; careful research procedures; strong conceptualization; and relevance of research and topic. The major problems are related to the above criteria in that they involve poor research or conceptualization of the topic, weak writing style and lack of author knowledge as well as submitting to an inappropriate journal.
