Who's counting? Quasi-facts and stepfamilies in reports of number of siblings
Article Abstract:
Discrepancies in reports of sibling number were investigated. Data from a sample of 9,400 individuals aged 19-95 who were interviewed in the 1987-1988 and 1992-1994 waves of the National Survey of Families and Households were analyzed to examine sibling relationships over the life course. Empirical results showed that 15% of the respondents reported more siblings in the first wave than in the second wave of the survey and that discrepancies in reported sibling number were greatest among individuals with complex family histories.

Contagion in family affection: Mothers, fathers, and young adult children
Article Abstract:
An understanding of the family system is needed to fully understand any dyadic relationship in a family. A framework for studying the interdependence of family affective relationships has been developed, based on systems theory, and the general hypothesis that affective relationships between parent-child pairs are affected by crossover relationships with the other parent, is tested. The results indicated that contagion processes will lead to either rising warmth or rising tension in family affect, and the conclusion that fathers and mothers are embedded similarly in the family affective system is supported.
