Landscape art has typically been about creating Edwardian influenced lush borders in an enclosed space. Garden designers are using more exotic species that create a sense of openness which eliminates boundaries and draws the observer away from the confines of the immediate space.

There is a part of Japan's religious life that offers visitors an opportunity to retreat to meditation experiences by visiting various shrines, temples and gardens. One woman's experience with trying to reconcile ancient with modern customs is described.
