Bittersweet
Article Abstract:
The US sugar industry has been granted generous protection and domestic sugar prices are some twice levels found in world markets. Discharge from sugar farms has created environmental problems in the Everglades, Florida. There is a debate on how much sugar companies should contribute to the cost of tackling the problem. Competition in the industry has also increased as a result of the 1996 farm bill, and this has hit weaker sugar firms. Flo-Sun and US Sugar are moving into refining, and US Sugar is also focusing on its business strategy as a whole, while Flo-Sun is seeking political solutions.
