Berlin's big dig
Article Abstract:
A deep slurry wall of cement bentonite was built to ensure effective demolition of the existing structure and excavation during the construction of the underground FriedrichstadtPassagen in Berlin, Germany. The wall was supported by using horizontal steel beams and the high voltage cables in the construction area are protected by supporting them on a steel frame. A joint was made in the foundation mats, and an insulation layer is installed between the mat and the steel piles to decrease vibrations caused by the adjoining U-bahn tracks.
