The first census
Article Abstract:
Ancient artifacts show censuses were conducted as early as 4,000 years ago. Population records spanning the period between 2500 BC and 1600 BC found in ancient Mesopotamian cities provide a wealth of information to archeologists attempting to reconstruct the demographic, economic and social conditions of the time. The clay tablets allow scientists to gain a better understanding of such matters as ancient population sizes, the terrain of the city-state and the geographical distribution of different ethnic groups.
