Architect Lorenzo Apicella joined international design partnership Pentagram in October 1998 because he felt he would be able to become more actively involved in design. Pentagram is an organisation which allows individual architects to head their own teams, while benefiting from the economies of scale a large firm can bring. Apicella believes the design of a building does not stop once the project is finished, but must continue from within, including furniture and fittings.

Working as a nurse on Hoy, a remote island in the Orkneys, can involve many roles beyond pure medical care, according to Fiona Thomson. The life of a community nurse is very different from that of a hospital nurse, and in remote areas involves being on call throughout the day and night. The local terrain is very difficult, and some visits have to be made partially on foot.
