The women in Vermeer's paintings possess a mysterious, captivating quality. They are contemplative and content to remain indoors, yet there is often a subtext beneath this look. Twenty-one of Vermeer's paintings will be exhibited until Feb 11, 1996 at the National Gallery in Washington DC.
